Statement By Al Gore on the Initial Sequencing of the Human Genome

Nashville - June 26 - I applaud the hard work of scientists in both the public and private sector who have successfully completed an initial sequencing of the human genome. Both the international Human Genome Project and Celera Genomics Corporation have provided an historic first step toward what will surely become a limitless progression of new medical breakthroughs. A blueprint for human life will help researchers and physicians worldwide to better diagnose, treat and cure an array of diseases. We can win the war on cancer and continue our battle against every incurable disease left on the planet.

If I am entrusted with the presidency, I will continue to advocate for the international Human Genome Project as well as expanded cooperation with the private sector, supporting further scientific and medical research as well as exploration of the legal and ethical implications of this great milestone.
